The first annual Maker Fair held in San Mateo last weekend was super rad. Check out Make mag and their site www.makezine.com

Even though there were tons of crafts by the best crafters, sewers, and designers out there… complete with lots of lovely goods and fashion shows and Diana of Project Runway fame… I steered clear of the crafts. I was much more interested and focused on the geek factor of the faire. Talking to hackers, engineers, and inventors interests me much more than the sewing circles. sorry!

My favorites were the eggbot by Bruce Shapiro (an explo collaborator), the automated painting machine, the motorized unicycle, the Woz playing polo on segways!, the interactive constellation software/video piece, the thumble sampler by ECC. and seeing Michael Scheiss with his pinball machines, catching up with him, and hearing that the pinball arcade is a ‘go’.
