He’s failure to admit his guilt is disturbing. If he admits to his crimes – his sentence is likely commuted to life in prison. Much easier for Arnold to make that call. His attorneys seem to be pointing to the good things he’s done since he’s been in prison, which is fine. But I don’t hear anyone demanding a new trial for him.
If he’s not guilty, then executing him is disturbing and tragic.
These issues get sticky when you execute people 20 years later. Makes the folks in Singapore hanging that Aussie chap look reasonable. I’m not for the death penalty, but I can almost respect the position when sentences are carried out in a timely fashion. I think you can argue the deterrent effect there. (You can bet there will be fewer Aussies trying to smuggle “Vitamin H” for a while.)
There are lots of folks in prison who are already rehabilitated. But they won’t be freed. Politicians can’t take the risk of looking weak on crime. (If Arnold takes that gamble, it’s only because of his action star persona that he might get away with it.) The prison system is a mess. It’s now a business. Big contracts and powerful unions. Builders who’s entire nitch is building prisons.
I always think about how I feel when I hear in the news China has executed a prisoner…I think -how uncivilized – and then I remember they get the same news blurb about the US.
i recently saw a program about the prison systems, more specifically the architecture of them. turns out the most popular are the most expensive and lease effective institutions. our problems as a nation and our beauracracy definitely lie alot deeper than a sensationalized spotlighted case. but so it goes….
But is he guilty of the murders or not?
